Callcard Information

Issued free of charge to delegates at one of the 1989 IMI (Irish Management Institute) conferences called "Ireland's Europe". A 20 Unit Callcard was also issued. Cardphones for the Autelca system were in place at the Great Sothern (now Malton) hotel where the conference was held in Killarney. Some of the 20 unit cards were sold to members of the public for £3.50 and sold out very quickly. Unfortunately after the conference many of these cards were binned by hotel cleaning staff due to delegates lack of interest or knowledge of the cards.

All the 50 Unit cards were given out at the conference. Some cards re-surfaced after media interest but having been stored improperly more than likely, many were in poor condition. These cards are the rarest Callcards and at the height of Callcard collecting a pair could sell for £1, 400.

50 Unit card serial range: 00003351-00004100 (note the lower number compared to the 20 unit card).

My parents along with my uncle were at the conference in Killarney. My uncle picked up a few of the cards from out of the bins, held onto them, sold some in later years and made some good coin. He still has some cards I believe.i used to get so pissed off with my folks for not bringing me to this as been a kid at the time I know I would have been picking them out of the bins..

Hi John,

Your uncle certainly hit the jackpot on that occasion! I'd say he made a nice penny after the conference indeed.
Interestingly my uncle, who had a senior role in the IMI at the time spoke at the Ireland's Europe conference. He remembers the Callcards and binning them! I think most of the delegates were too concerned about food and beverages after the conference than to hold on to pieces of plastic!
Do you collect Callcards yourself? Will you be trying to persuade your uncle to drop you a set of the IMIs if he still has any? :) I have both of them myself but many collectors are still after at least one of them, in particular the 50 unit.
Thanks for the comment :)

Nick
